Gov’t urged to adopt good yam seed technology in agric development

The Crops Research Institute wants government to incorporate good quality yam seed technologies in the country’s agricultural development agenda.

Head of Biotechnology, Prof. Marian Quain, believes they can guarantee small-holder yam farmers bumper yield and creatE employment opportunities.

She was speaking at the institute’s open day at Fumesua, near Kumasi. Yam seed availability in Ghana is a major constraint as it is estimated to account for between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of cultivation cost.

Aeroponics, a method of growing plants in a soil-less-air environment, with nutrient water has been tested and proven effective in yam seed production.
