Government has said it will soon deploy some 8,000 Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) across the country to improve the fight against crime.
Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia said on Wednesday that government wants the police’s fight against crime to be supported with real-time data.
“We’ve deployed about 1000 cameras across the country with a central monitoring centre in Accra, Tamale and Kumasi. The three centres will monitor all the 16 regions. So the 1,000 cameras is just the first phase.
“The second phase will be a deployment of 8000 additional cameras,” the Vice President said.
Government is in the process of procuring 8,000 cameras to be deployed across the country as part of measures to fight crime,” the Vice President said at a Business Roundtable forum organised by Ishmael Yamson & Associates.
He explained that the deployment of the CCTVs is part of a drive to digitise the police’s information system. The Vice President, however, did not give a timeline for deployment of the 8,000 new cameras.

Dr Bawumia also charged the business community to be ready to embrace new technologies to remain competitive.
Wave of criminal activities
In January this year, police revealed two specialised units of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have joined efforts to crack down on the recent wave of crimes in many parts of the country.
A statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana police said they are marshalling all their resources to deal with the security situation.
“Officers from specialised units of the Criminal Investigation Department including theCounter-Terrorism and Special Weapon and Tactics Units are part of the team of investigators handling these cases,” the statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, David Eklu, said.
