Ghana scores 75% in 2021 Women, Business & Law index

Ghana scored 75% in the 2021 Women, Business and the Law index, compiled by the World Bank.

The overall score for Ghana is higher than the regional average observed across Sub-Saharan.

The country got a perfect score of 100%in terms of constraints on freedom of movement, laws affecting women’s decisions to work, and constraints related to marriage.

However, on issues about laws affecting women’s pay, constraints on women’s starting and running a business, among others, the report said the nation could consider reforms to improve legal equality for women.

One of the lowest scores for Ghana is on the indicator related to laws affecting women’s work after having children. Indeed, the nation scored 20%.

To improve on the Parenthood Indicator, the report said Ghana may wish to consider making paid leave of at least 14 weeks available to mothers, making the government administer 100% of maternity leave benefits and making paid leave available to fathers.

Within the Sub-Saharan Africa region, Mauritius scored the maximum score of 91.9%.
