Upper West Police Command to ban riding of motorbike with pillion passenger at night

From Monday, August 23, persons riding motorbikes in the Upper West region cannot move with pillion passengers after 6:30 pm.

Tricycles will also be banned from operating at night. In addition, tricycle operators cannot pick additional passengers when there are already two occupants.

Again, riders attending to personal businesses cannot conclude that before taking passengers to their destination.

These form part of measures outlined by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, ACP Peter Ndekugri Anabugri at a press conference to help fight crime in the region.

He noted that most crimes are committed using tricycles popularly referred to as “Mahama Camboo.”

He, therefore, stated that “No two young men shall be on a motorbike after 6:30pm. Security is very expensive. If you don’t take inconveniences, you can never get security.”

“Don’t pick a passenger and later tell him or her that you are passing here to pick something or somebody. It is not acceptable,” he also warned.

He cited Bawku Municipality where security has improved due to people being prevented from riding motorbikes.

According to ACP Peter Ndekugri Anabugri, only persons with permit will be allowed to ride at night time.

“All our observations indicate that Motor King is normally used to pick booty during night break-ins. If you are an operator of a tricycle and you are to pick anything in the night, please come to the MTTD for a permit,” he said.

ACP Peter Ndekugri also hinted that groups made up of young men will be dismantled after 12midnight.

He also spoke of illegal and wrong parking of vehicles in a crowded area.

He said the MTTD will be on the prowl to look for drivers of such vehicles and summon them before the lawcourt.

To ensure its success, ACP Peter Ndekugri has called on the residents and the media to help implement the measures outlined to reduce crime in the region.

According to him, he will work within the law to ensure that crime in the region is reduced to the barest minimum.

‘‘I am the chief watchman of the region and not the commander. I am not going to sit in my room and be sleeping and snoring, saying that I am the commander when the next day crime is everywhere. I am not going to succumb to any pressure. Let’s go by the law and all of us will be safe”, he added
