Eight arrested over attacks in northern Nigeria

The security forces in Nigeria have arrested eight people suspected of involvement in recent attacks in the north-western state of Kaduna.

Addressing journalists, the head of a special military task force Colonel David Nwankonobi said the suspects were arrested in two locations in the south of Kaduna.

He said they had various weapons in their possession, including locally-made pump action guns, machetes and motorcycles.

These were the first major arrests by the special military task force charged with maintaining peace in the region.

The arrests follow a series of deadly attacks in the region in the past week, in which nearly 30 people have been killed.

The killings triggered protests last weekend in major cities across Nigeria. The protesters demanded an immediate end to what they described as “genocide” taking place in their villages.
