Disturbances in Bawku affecting revenue mobilization efforts of NEDCo

The current disturbances in Bawku are posing difficulties for the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

Speaking with the media after a meeting with the PURC led by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Ishmael Ackah in Bolgatanga, the Upper East Area Manager of NEDCO, Eugene Odoi Addo, said that because of the unstable situation in the Bawku area, personnel of the company cannot respond to customer complaints effectively.

Also, the company is unable to pursue debtors for the monies owed.

The situation, according to Mr. Addo is causing financial losses to the power distribution company.

“Every utility company needs money to run so we do our best to chase customers to pay their bills. However, the challenges we have, for example, in areas like Bawku where the environment itself is not safe, we are trying very hard to find other ways we can get our monies”.

“For example, recently we launched our electronic payment platform which would afford customers the chance to be in their homes and buy power or pay their utility bills,” he said.

Responding to a question on how the company is able to mitigate losses that come through non-payment of bills, Mr. Addo said “in places that are safe, we embark on regular disconnections to collect our monies to make sure that customers whose bills are in contention, we resolve them quickly for the customers to be able to pay their bills or buy power”.
