Moi’s body airlifted to his home for burial

The body of Kenya’s longest-serving leader Daniel arap Moi has been airlifted by military helicopter to his home town of Kabarak, in the Rift Valley region, for his burial.

The body is set to land at Kabarak School at 07:30 local time (04:30 GMT). Thousands of Kenyans have arrived at the venue and others are following the proceedings on giant screens mounted at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru county.

The former president died last week at a private hospital in the capital, Nairobi, aged 95 years – nearly two decades after leaving office.

His burial on Wednesday is expected to be characterised by special military procedures in his honour.

As a former Commander-in-Chief, Mr Moi will receive a three-volley salute. Another gun salute will be fired after his body is lowered into the grave.

Members of the firing party will point their guns above the late president’s casket and fire a gun salute ranging between 13 and 22 rounds of ammunition.

Tens of thousands attended his state funeral on Tuesday at a stadium that he built in 1983.

This was preceded by long queues at parliament buildings for the viewing of his body where it lay in state for three days.

The coffin was draped in Kenya’s national flag and carried on a gun carriage as the funeral procession made its way through the streets of Nairobi to Nyayo National Stadium for the state funeral.
