NIC trains Security personnel on use of New GoTa Device

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has taken police personnel through a day’s training aimed at equipping them with the requisite knowledge on how to use a special app to monitor insurance policies of vehicles on our roads.

The training of trainers also saw the National Insurance Commission (NIC) presenting a total of 500 GoTa phones to the Motor Traffic & Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service for enforcement activities.

These devices are meant to detect vehicles with fake motor insurance policies plying our roads as well as those who do not have any insurance policy cover.

Presenting the items to the Police at an official ceremony at the NGAT HALL in Tamale today Friday, April 23, 2021, the Deputy Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Michael Kofi Andoh, noted that the use of the devices “would further reduce the number of road safety menace in our country.

He made reference to the disturbing figures of road crushes in the first three months of 202,1 surpassing the fatalities recorded of the yearlong Covid-19 Pandemic in the country, indicating that the GoTa Phones will help track unregistered vehicles to help mitigate the impact of road crushes.

Mr. Kofi Andoh further added that the GoTa phones are connected to the Motor Insurance Database and it will offer the security agencies the opportunity to carry out their duties smoothly with the data they will have access to.

On his part Dr. Samuel Sasu Mensah Director of operations at MTTD, noted that the gesture will offer officers the opportunity to verify swiftly a vehicle’s status making it easier for the MTTD to investigate motor insurance cases.

He added further that training will be done at the various MTTD units at the regional, divisional and district levels to equip officer of the knowledge to use the GoTa device.

The device will check for insurance status of vehicles, its validity and when it is due to expire.

The new device will soon make available details of the vehicle owners including contact details to help in investigation processes in terms of accidents.

Meanwhile police officers have been urged to desist from using the device as a means of communication with their loved ones.

The participating officers were drawn from Northern, North East, Savanna, Upper East and Oti Regions.
