South Africa secures funding to transition from coal energy

South Africa has secured $8.5bn (£6.2bn) in funding to help the country shift from coal energy.

The deal which will be financed by US, UK, France, Germany and EU will invest in renewable energy and protecting coal workers and communities.

A South African environmental journalists reports that South Africa is the most carbon inefficient economy in the G20.

“Nearly 90% of electricity comes from coal. Its power utility has $25 billion in debt thanks to corruption and mismanagement. It also has incredible potential for a mixed grid,” Sipho Kings from The Continent tweeted.
