Ratify ILO 189 – Domestic Services Workers Union to government

The Domestic Workers Convention, 2011 (No. 189) which is yet to be ratified by Parliament will entirely address the well-being of domestic service workers, according to the National President of the Domestic Services Workers Union, Eva Atakpa.

The union says popularizing the Domestic Service Workers Regulation will improve the conditions of domestic workers.

The president then applauded the government for passing the Domestic Service Workers Regulation 2020 (L.I. 2408).

In a two-day workshop supported by ActionAid Ghana, the Domestic Services Workers Union trained its members to fully utilize the Domestic Service Workers Regulation.

The Women’s Rights and Campaigns Manager at ActionAid Ghana, Margaret Brew-Ward says the partnership was in line with the 16 days of activism to enhance education on gender-based violence, economic exploitation and violence against women in the informal economy.

“We are gathered here to train Domestic Service workers on their rights because the Government of Ghana has come up with a Domestic Service Workers regulation and approved it. It is a new regulation so domestic workers are not even aware of the content of the regulation. So we train the workers on the content of the regulation; what it says about minimum wage and where to report cases and how to seek redress when they face violence at work.”

The Deputy General Secretary of the Domestic Services Workers Union Nii Odartey Anderson called on the public to treat Domestic Service workers as human beings with the uttermost respect as formal sector worker experience.

The Technical Adviser of the Domestic Services Workers Union, Adwoa Sakyi explained that “the nature of the work makes women venture into the sector. It looks like their own traditional work. Due to the societal situation, many women find themselves in that sector. People underestimate the service hence they badly treat domestic service workers”.

The Domestic Service Workers Union is affiliated to the Trader Union Congress umbrella through the Union of Informal Workers Association.
