The Tamale High Court on Thursday, 23 May 2019, sentenced two persons out of the seven persons arrested in connection with the ongoing communal violence in the Chereponi and Saboba districts of the North East and Northern Regions respectively between Konkombas and Chokosis.
The suspects were charged with possession of firearms without lawful authority. Two of the suspects, Laak Nanjo and Nablek Zakpali pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to serve five years each in prison by the presiding Judge, His Lordship Richard Kogyapwa.
The other suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges and have, therefore, been put on police remand to reappear in court on 7 June 2019. One other suspect arrested in connection with the violence is receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital under police surveillance.
The Northern Regional Police spokesperson, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko who confirmed this development to Class News said the police will restore peace in the area.
“Police and Military personnel on the grounds are doing everything possible to ensure the situation is brought under control,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry per the recommendation of the Northern Regional Security Council has reviewed the curfew hours from the previous 6:00pm to 6:00am to 4:00pm to 6:00am.
In the early hours of Thursday, 23 May 2019, some assailants believed to Konkombas raided one Chokosi community called Nansoni Lower during curfew hours. They burnt down several houses and the inhabitants had to flee the community.
