The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II has donated food items to victims of the Akosombo dam spillage at Mepe and Buipe.
The donation included 300 bags of maize, 100 bags of 50kg rice, and 400 tubers of yam for the Mepe flood victims, while another 100 bags of maize went to victims at Buipe.
According to the king, the items are his kingdom’s way of supporting the victims who have lost everything.
Over 39,000 people have been displaced following the Akosombo Dam spillage while some 12,600 residents of the North Tongu constituency have been affected.
It is also estimated that about 1,500 houses have been totally destroyed, with 53 schools affected.
In a speech read on his behalf by the chief of Zangbalun Naa Dr Yakubu II, the Ya Na described the situation as both pathetic and worrying.
He said schools and clinics have submerged leading to the suspension of education and the lack of basic but essential medical services.
“The sheer number of people displaced is staggering,” the Overlord said.
He called on government and corporate Ghana to continue to support the victims.
”We also call on the relevant ministries to tackle the situation holistically as this extend along the Volta River up to the north especially the Savannah region.
He explained that the flooding of Buipe is almost perennial and must be solved once and for all.
”This continuous yearly loss of properties by the residents is unacceptable and we need to act now and avert a repetition of it come next year,” the king added.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who received the items on behalf of the people expressed their gratitude to the king.
”We are very much touched and what our father, mentor and king has done today is a confirmation that he is not only a wise king but he is also a compassionate king who cares deeply about everyone whether you belong to his kingdom or not,” he said.
The North Tongu MP assured the chief that the donation would be given to the affected people.
“We give him the fullest of assurance that there will be no diversion, there will be no hoarding. There will be full transparency and accountable,” he said.
