The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to reexamine its decision to partially reopen schools, following the detection of COVID-19 cases in the Accra Girls Senior High School.
The Minority explained that its call for a review has been necessitated by a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases since the reopening of schools.
The Minority in the statement further said calls for schools to shut down may be justified, given that “some of these school children, report to school through the use of commercial vehicles, which increases their risk of infections.”
The Minority thus emphasized the need for the government, the Ministry of Education, teacher unions and civil society organizations to “get back to the table, and with the help of medical experts, re-examine the situation at hand, and make amends in the initial decisions that saw the reopening of schools.”
Six of the students in Accra Girls High School who tested positive were isolated in the school’s sickbay on Monday, June 29, 2020, together with some other students who also showed symptoms of COVID-19.
Health officials from the Ayawaso North Health directorate on Saturday, July 4, moved the infected students to the Ga East Municipal Hospital for treatment.
This development has led to the students demonstrating amidst fears that the virus is spreading amongst them.
