Kurt Okraku denies interfering in Charles Akonnor’s work as Black Stars coach

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku has denied allegations of interfering with the work of former Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor.

Akonnor had previously stated that it was a challenge controlling player call-ups, but Okraku has refuted these claims, saying that he did not interfere in Akonnor’s work or that of other coaches such as Otto Addo and Chris Hughton.

“I did not interfere in the job of Charles Akonnor, I did not interfere in the work of Otto Addo neither did I interfere in the work of Chris Hughton.

“Whatever we do is on the screens and all of us see it!” Okraku said at a press conference in Kumasi.

Akonnor was the first Black Stars coach appointed in Okraku’s administration, serving from early 2020 until his dismissal in September 2021.

Okraku brought in Milovan Rajevac who was sacked after three months following Ghana’s group stage exit at AFCON 2021.

Otto Addo stepped in and qualified Ghana for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but stepped down after his contract expired, leading to the appointment of Hughton.

Hughton was recently sacked after another group stage exit, this time at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast. There is currently a search for a new coach.
