CAF Confederation Cup: Banks refused to grant Dreams loans because of risk – Ameenu Shardow
Ameenu Shardow, the General Manager of Dreams FC, has disclosed that the club almost turned down the opportunity to participate in the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup due to difficulties securing loans from financial institutions.
The Still Believe lads overcame these difficulties to participate in the competition for the first time in their history and are now making even more history.
The latest of their successes in the competition was emerging victorious against Stade Malien at the Stade du 26 Mars in Bamako on Sunday, March 31, 2024, in the first leg of the quarterfinals.
The Ghana FA Cup holders are now on the verge of reaching the semifinal after securing a 2-1 advantage from the first leg away from home.
This triumph marked Dreams FC as the first Ghanaian club in 24 years to secure an away victory in the knockout stages of an African inter-club competition.
However, Ameenu Shardow revealed in an interview with Nhyira Fm that financial constraints posed a significant hurdle for the team at the start.
“Some of us in management were against the club’s decision to go to Africa because if you look at the record of Ghanaian clubs in recent times in Africa, we thought going to Africa would be counterproductive.
“Some of our bankers denied us loans to embark in Africa because they thought it was too much of a risk to invest in such a venture. It hasn’t been easy financially.”
