Mental Disorders have no known causes- Mental Health Expert

Mental disorder is said to have no known causes, but research indicates that things within and around an individual is most likely to cause them some mental disorder.

This was made known Monday March 2,2021 during a discussion on the topic “General Idea of Mental Disorder”, hosted by FiilaFm’s Morning Show Host Akosua Kwartemaa Boakye.

In his submission Captain Nana Adomako, a mental health specialist with the Airborne Force medical Centre, noted that in as much as mental Disorder can be hereditary, it can equally be transmitted by some behavioral factors of a pregnant mother onto her unborn child.

He noted drunkenness, smocking and other social vices that may have a personal impact on both pregnant women and their unborn children, as a major contributory factor to mental illness.

On the signs to look out for, Captain Adomako outlined four thematic areas in a suspected victim, notably; how they feel, their moods, how they think and their behavior to help determine ones state of mental health.

Mr. Felix B. Yelewere, an officer from the Sagnarigu Health Directorate, Choggu, noted that people sometimes can contract mental disorders from over thinking, over learning, among several others.

To people who feel mentally unwell, a passionate appeal has been made to them to access healthcare, with an assurance that mental health cases are treatable.

Captain Adomako pointed out that the issue of stigma is a serious problem in the fight against mental illness in the country, noting that it even extends to healthcare workers who work closely with patients with mental health conditions.

“People even refer to us as the madman’s doctor, and even go as far as telling us that we talk and act like the madmen we take care of” Captain Adomako asserted.

This according to him makes the fight against mental disorders more cumbersome than usual.

On how to prevent these disorders, he tasked citizens to take the treatment of malaria seriously, as an extended one may lead to cerebral malaria and subsequently to seizures that causes mental illness.

Mr. Yelewere on the other hand noted that people must look at managing their stress as it is also a form of mental disorder.

Meanwhile an appeal has been made to the general public to be interested in their mental health status as “one cannot have total health without mental health”.
