Be bold, report attacks to us – NMC to journalists

The National Media Commission (NMC) is urging journalists and media practitioners not to be reluctant in reporting issues of attacks on them while in line of duty.

The Commission which is responsible for regulating and monitoring the activities of media houses says it is ready to follow up and investigate any form of attack on journalists when such matters are brought before it.

The Chairman of the National Media Commission, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo who spoke during a regional consultative meeting on the safety of journalists wants media practitioners to have faith in the Commission when such incidents arise.

According to him, the police do not have the mandate to investigate issues of freedom of speech.

He says the only body mandated to do that is the NMC.

Mr. Ayeboafo thus urged media practitioners and journalists to report issues of attacks to his outfit.

“Anytime we have any manner of attack, the first place that we must report to is the National Media Commission because when you go to the police, it doesn’t have the power in investigating anything in relation to the exercise of freedom of speech.”

“The police would be looking at the criminal aspects of the matter but when any one of us is prevented from discharging our responsibilities as media people, it is not only criminal, it is also civil because they are denying us our rights which are guaranteed under the constitution, and it is the NMC that can look in these matters.”
