Bawumia cuts sod for construction of Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu roads

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has cut the sod for construction works to begin on the Hohoe-Jasikan to Dodo Pepesu stretch of the Eastern Corridor road.

The Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu Project which forms part of Phase 1 of the $2 billion Government of Ghana/Sinohydro Master Project Agreement is part of earmarked projects under the deal.

Speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony at Jasikan, in the Oti Region, for work to begin on the stretch, Dr. Bawumia assured the residents that government would ensure that the project is completed on schedule, and they would receive their fair share of development projects.

He noted that, of all the critical roads listed in the 2020 budget, Hohoe-Jasikan and Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu are the only roads to commence now while the others follow suit.

Commenting on the issue of the omission of the roads in the Volta Region from the list of critical roads in the 2020 budget, the Vice President said roads in the Volta Region were already under construction and noted that the NDC would have realized their error if they had taken time to read the 2020 budget statement judiciously.

The Eastern Corridor Roads project, allotted as N2 of the National Road Network, begins from the Tema Motorway through to the Volta, Oti, Northern, North East and Upper East regions to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The Eastern Corridor road project also defined as National Road – N2 is approximately 695km and one of three north-south corridors (Eastern, Central and Western corridors) in the country, linking the southern coastal seaports to the hinterland and landlocked neighbours in the north. It is a strategic alternative route to the main Central Corridor, shorter route by almost 200km.

Under the Ghana- China Sinohydro arrangement, Sinohydro Group Limited of China will provide infrastructure of government’s choice in exchange for Ghana’s refined bauxite.

The projects are under two phases with the Eastern Corridor Eastern road project under Phase 1.

It costs $646.6 million.

Construction of the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu Road of the Eastern Corridor will involve the construction of the sixty-six (66) kilometre section of the Eastern Corridor Road between Hohoe to Jasikan and Dodo Pepesu.
