Eighty-five institutions and individuals in the Tamale Metropolis have been summoned to appear before the Tamale District Court by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for non-payment of water bills.
Despite disconnections and follow-ups by GWCL officials, these customers have failed to settle their outstanding bills.
Speaking to Citi News, the head of Public Relations for GWCL, Stanley Martey, urged all defaulting customers to honour their bill obligations to avoid prosecution.
“The Ghana Water Company has for some time been encouraging customers to pay their bills because our operations are dependent on the bills our customers pay. We do not take customers to court unless they become recalcitrant. However, we have realized that some customers are taking us for granted, so we have been prosecuting recalcitrant customers.”
“We are prosecuting some customers in the Northern Region because they are being recalcitrant. When customers refuse to pay, it affects our operations because we invest the little money we collect from customers back into the system to operate, get water to our people, maintain our equipment, and do what is expected of us. This will not be the last time we prosecute recalcitrant customers. We are urging our customers to pay their bills.”
Mr. Martey also disclosed that the police are investigating 31 customers for their alleged involvement in illegal water connections.
