Rescuer describes moment survivor pulled from Zambia mine

Earlier, we reported that a survivor had been rescued from a mine in Zambia where dozens of workers have been trapped since Friday.

Daniel Kamenga, part of the rescue mission, has now described the moment, telling national radio broadcaster ZNBC: “We heard a voice calling for help… It was then that we knew there was somebody alive, that is when we started following it up.”

The survivor has been identified as 49-year-old Mwanshe Mukoko.

The dead bodies of two workers have also been retrieved from the open-cast pit in the Chingola region, around 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of the capital Lusaka,

State radio quoted Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo as saying on Wednesday that the number of families claiming missing members has risen to 38.

Search and rescue operations are still under way at the mine.
