The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) says the 15 percent increase in transport fares will not change.
The Council on Monday, February 21 announced an upward adjustment of 15 percent increase in transport fares effective February 26, after a meeting with transport operators.
This new adjustment has been met with several complaints from the public who are already aggrieved over the economic hardship in the country.
Speaking to JoyNews, General Secretary of the Council, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, said despite the public outcry over the adjustment, their decision remains the same.
“It’s unfortunate we have some people going round on social media and national media saying they are not going to go by that and will not adjust to our percentage increase but I think it will be quite unfair and unprofessional to do that…as we indicated earlier on, the 15 percent increase in transport fares remains unchanged,” he said.
He entreated the public to accept the new fares, which will take effect from Saturday, February 26.
The new increment will affect shared taxis, intra-city transport, popularly known as ‘trotro’ and intercity transport.
The drivers say the hike has been necessitated by the increase in the price of fuel and the economic hardship the country is facing, which has affected their work.
The 15% increment was proposed after transport unions held a meeting with stakeholders on Monday to negotiate over their initial proposed 30 per cent upward adjustment.
Over the past few weeks, there has been a consistent increase in the price of fuel at the pumps, a situation many drivers have described as insensitive.
