Appoint Road Safety Officers to ensure members adhere- Ya-Naa to Political parties

The Overlord of the Dagbon who also doubles as the road safety ambassador for the Northern Region, Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II, has called on political parties to appoint road safety officers to ensure their followers abide by road safety regulations during rallies and campaigns.

Addressing political parties and other departmental heads at a road safety engagement in Yendi, the overlord expressed concern over the high number of deaths and injuries through accidents during political campaign seasons.

The Overlord of Dagbon made this known during a launch of the road safety campaign to help safeguard lives ahead of the General elections in December.

The campaign seeks to engage political parties and their supporters to adopt road safety measures such as wearing of crash helmets, avoiding overloading and reckless riding of motorbikes and cars on the road.

Statistics available indicates that the former Northern region In 2018 suffered a total of 164 deaths with over 900 injuries, while 2019 recorded a total of 132 deaths in Northern region alone with the exception of the two newly carved regions.

The Regional Manager of the National Road Safely Authority (NRSA), further added that for January 2020 alone, the region recorded 15 motor crushes with 9 deaths and 1death from a total of 9 car crushes.

This According to the Regional Manager of the NRSA, Mr Alexander Ayaatah is an indication that the region has failed in issues of road safety regulations and that political campaign season are a major period for indiscipline on the road hence care must be taken to curb this figures.

The Overlord who is a road safety ambassador presented some crash helmets to the various political parties to encourage their supporters to wear helmets during rallies and also donated some road safety manual booklets to the GES to help imbibe in the future generations some road safety education.

Meanwhile the the Director of Research Monitoring and Evaluations at the NRSA, Mr Martin Owusu Afram, commended the Overlord for his foresight.

In attendance were representatives from all the political parties, various departmental heads, Various Regional Ministers, Security agencies, Students among others.
