UW: We welcome drone delivery centre; arrangments being made to host centre – Wa East DCE

The District Chief Executive for the Wa East District, Dr. Suleman Edwurah Mahama Kandia has welcomed the Vice President’s decision to open a Zipline Drone Delivery Centre at Funsi, the District Capital next year. He said the decision was a well-thought-out one that will inure to the benefit of the people of the Wa East District, the remaining 10 Municipalities and Districts as well as a great portion of Northern Ghana.

It will be recalled that the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia speaking at Ashesi University on the agenda ‘Transforming An Economy Through Digitalisation: The Ghana Story’ mentioned that four drone centres had already been set up in Omenako, Mpanya, Vobsi and Sefwi Wiawso. Meanwhile, others are supposed to be set up at Anum in the Eastern Region and Kete Krachi in the Oti Region by December this year.

The Vice President went on to state that in 2022, the final centers will be set up.

“The next two distribution centers will be located at Funsi in the Upper West Region and Kintampo in the Bono East in 2022. This will bring Zipline coverage to virtually the whole of Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

Speaking to A1radio on the back of the Vice President’s comments, Dr. Mahama Kandia said “I thank the Vice President for this great initiative. The development of yesterday is not the same as development today. We are looking at development in terms of how you can make certain facilities available. How do you do this? For some, we have to go online like the Vice President is already promoting and others we are looking at how to use technology to deliver and that is the Zipline that is coming,” he explained.

He continued to say that “if you look at the topography of the area, you will understand why Wa East is a place where the Vice President is trying to give special attention to,” he said.

Dr. Mahama Kandia explained that when the drone delivery centre is finally set up, certain needless deaths in the District and all other surrounding areas will be avoided.

Responding to comments that suggested that the area’s telecommunication network connectivity is not in the best position to support the delivery centre, the DCE for Wa East posited that feasibility studies had already been conducted in the area, and the Assembly along with all other relevant agencies have begun addressing all the necessary concerns.

“The Vice President did not just wake up and decide to do this. There is a foundation. Most of the places without the network, we [the Assembly] are going round planting the masts. Some of them are almost complete. When they are complete, they will facilitate the process,” he explained.

The Vice President touted Ghana’s reputation as the country with the largest medical drone delivery service in the world excitedly adding that “what is even more impressive is that the drone centers are 100% manned by young talented Ghanaians”. Zipline is said to have distributed nearly 1 million routine vaccine doses in 2020 alone.
