A 64-year-old man has allegedly been shot to death following violent attacks resulting from a land dispute in the Northern Region.
According to the Northern Regional Police, investigations are ongoing to capture the perpetrators of the crime.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Northern Regional Police Crime Officer, Superintendent Baba Ananga stated that the attacks stemmed from a land dispute between two clans of the Kokomba community and resulted in the burning of some property and the death of an elderly man.
He also stated that police and military have been deployed to these communities in order to keep the peace.
“What happened was that yesterday at about 7 am, two tribal clans within the Kokomba community at Tingban had a land dispute. They fought about a portion of farmland which is about 30 kilometres from Saboba, and it had to do with farming in that particular area which has been a dispute for some time. One of the clans, Nakpando, burnt eight houses, two motorbikes, and a bicycle. They also went ahead to burn a corn mill and shot a 64-year-old man in the area. Police were called to that locality, and we proceeded to provide them with security to ensure that other communities will also be protected.”
“However, on Wednesday morning, the same attackers proceeded to another village in that locality called Nnumando, attacked the place and burnt five houses and as we speak, police and military have been stationed at those communities, which are far apart. We will station police there till we are able to keep the peace and complete our investigations in order to capture the perpetrators of this crime,” he stated.
Superintendent Ananga added that they are hopeful the police deployment will be able to sustain the peace long enough to finish investigations on the matter.
“We are sure that the police deployment will stop the attacks for a while. We have also gone ahead to locate other hotspots and provided security there. We have also identified some people that we will soon catch up with and arrest. We are also working with opinion leaders in the clan to stop the other clans from retaliating.”
