EC registers over 12 million in ongoing voters registration with 11 days left

More than 12 million voters have so far been registered in the ongoing mass voter registration exercise which has entered the penultimate phase.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Mensa, who made this known, said 12,371,651 persons had been registered across the country as of Sunday, July 26; a figure she said gave inspiration that the Commission would meet its 15 million target.

We have deployed 8,530 biometric registration kits and they are working efficiently; our officers are working round the clock efficiently and professionally to ensure that high numbers are registered on daily basis; and we have a good number of mobile registration team who go around to areas where we have higher concentration of people. The key thing now is for eligible citizens to make themselves available and our process will ensure that they are all registered,” she added.

The EC Chairperson stated this at the “Let the Citizens Know series” held in Accra on Monday, July 27, 2020, to provide updates on the ongoing registration exercise.

Throwing more light on the registration exercise, she said 11,629,480 eligible Ghanaians were registered by the Commission at the end of the fourth phase of the nationwide registration exercise on July 24.

She added that females constitued 52 per cent of the total registrants with males making up 48 per cent.

Additionally, she said 480,851 people, representing 4.1 per cent of the total registered persons were 18-year-old first time voters while 419,530 others were 19 years.

In addition, she said 46,237 of the those registered were persons with disability (PWDs).

On the documentation types used for the registration, the EC Chairperson said 60.3 of the total registered persons used the Ghana Card while 37.7 and 1.9 used gurantaors and the Ghanaian passport respectively.

The figures she presented showed that the Greater Accra Region still led the table with 2,615,925 registrants while the Ashanti and Eastern regions followed with 2,089,923 and 1,084,734 persons each.

In the fourth place is the CentralRegion with 1,071,519.

The Western, Northern and Volta regions followed in that order with 734,545; 687,123 and 660,508 registrants while the Bono and Upper East regions had 460,222 and 409,825 persons respectively.

Newly created Oti, Ahafo, North East and Savannah regions completed the list with 226,109; 212,670; 186,975 and 119,126 registrants respectively.

The EC Chairperson said as part of measures to make the registration process less cumbersome, the Commission had included persons who were 50 years to the category of persons who could visit the offices of EC to be registered.

She said health officials have also been added to that category.

Mrs Mensa said the EC was also concerned about creating a safe environment for PWDs to go through the registration process without inconveniences.

“We have registered 46,237 PWDs at the end of the fourth phase and this represents 0.4 per cent of the total registered persons.

“However, we have also received reports that a few PWDs especially those with hearing and speech disability have special needs that have not been met. We apologise to them and promise to address their challenges,” she said.

She reiterated that adequate personal protection equipment (PPE) have been deployed to all the registration centres to ensure the safety of registrants.
