2020 Population Census to go Digital

Ghana will witness its first ever digital Census in the 2020 Population and Housing Census, expected to begin in March 2020.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) will leverage on digital technology for the 2020 Census to ensure accurate and reliable database.

The Director of administration at the Ghana Statistical Service, Mr Kwadwo Asante indicated the 2020 census will be unique in three major ways namely; Digitization, taking of GPS coordinates of structures and the use of maps in allocating boundaries for data collection officers.

Mr Kwadwo Asante made this known at the Inauguration of the Regional Census Implementation Committee in Tamale.

The 8-member committee which is chaired by the Chief Director of the Regional Coordinating Council Mr.Alhassan Issahaku, has the responsibility of ensuring every Ghanaian leaving in this part of the country, is captured in the 2020 Population and Housing Census.

It was further disclosed that the questioner for the 2020 population and housing census has been duly completed and tried in some selected regions across the country.

Meanwhile in his presentation the Northern Regional Statistician, Mr. George Agbenyo admonished all to partake in exercise when it is operational, indicating that the data enables the service to capture the various categories of the population and identify which category should be targeted in terms of developmental projects.

The committee consisting of 8 members is chaired by Mr.Alhassan Issahaku, Chief Director Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

The other members of the Committee are; Chief Major (Rtd) Sulemana, Tolon-Lana and a member of the Regional house of chief, Mr. George Agbenyo, Northern Regional Statistician, Alhaji Issifu Seidu Iddi, Northern Regional Population Officer.

The rest are; Dr. John Bertson Eleeza, Regional Director Ghana Health Service, Alhaji Abdul Razak Saani, Regional Director National Commission for Civic Education, Mr. Edward Azure, Ghana Education Service and Mr. Ahmed Hussein, Regional Director, Information Service.

The last time the nation conducted a National Census was in 2010, which recorded a population of 24.2 million. The result implied that Ghana’s population increased by 30.4 per cent over the 2000 population figure of 18.9 million.
